Stevie Ray Vaughan - 1954-1990

This small tribute to Stevie Ray Vaughan post was set to auto-publish on Friday 27th but it didn't, so here it be...

Stevie Ray Vaughan died twenty years ago today. He had an almost unearthly ability to play the guitar.

Dedicated to the memory of the man and also to my brother Conor, whose love for Stevie and his music abides.

Pause for Thought.

It's been a rollicking old time this month on the 'mouthery. So I'm going to take a break for a few days.

Before I take off, I'll leave you with a few random bits.

1) To those of you who are surprised at the election 'result', don't be. Polling always suggested it was close, and with the general feeling being that the Greens were going to pick up a few votes, bear in mind that they were far more likely to nick 'em from the ALP than the Libs.

2) On this day in 1867, French poet Auguste-Marseille Barthélemy died in Marseilles. I first heard of the man about five minutes ago when I picked his name at random from a list of people who died this day in history. Here's one of his poems. The woman reading it could be talking about turnip and marzipan casserole for all I know...but it sounds lovely.

3) Tame Impala - Solitude is Bliss.

This is the best Australian band I've heard for years. With thanks to Belinda who introduced 'em to me...and it's for my friend Chris.

À Bientôt.

I'm Still Me.

Bigmouthery is about to celebrate its second birthday. The occasion will be marked by measuring its height and doubling it to see how tall it'll be as an adult.

Today is my 41st. Sure, it's not round, but it's prime. How often do you get one of those? And why do we have such a fondness for round numbers anyway? A sense of symmetry?

Today's blog is about the asymmetry of life. (Read on.)

The Use of the Word 'Nigger'.

(The audio blog for this entry can be heard at the new Bigmoutheryadio Youtube Channel.)

The title of this post contains a word that many people, including myself, consider grossly offensive, but its use is at the very heart of today's post. (Read the entry...)

Welcome to Bigmoutheryadio!!!

I've started a new Bigmouthery channel. Hopefully this will be the start of something very special for those in the Bigmouthery universe and that universe begins to expand. There'll be audio and video blogs...and possibly a sketch or two. Here's an introduction to the channel, featuring award-inserting host, John Gengduhbendy:

Jumpin' Joe Kittinger.

Fifty years ago today, a US Air Force test pilot, Captain Joe Kittinger, took off in a helium balloon.

Election 2010 - What Else Is On?

There has been a small hint of surprise as to why no election blog, given that campaigns from various countries have been Bigmouthery 'stock in trade' since I started blogging a few years ago. I don't have very good answers. Part of the reason is...I'm selfish. The blog's readership has ticked slowly upwards this year, and it ain' no thanks to campaign blogs. Other topics seem to draw more readers...and I like readers. Yes, I'm as populist, self-centred & hypocritical as our political leaders. (More...)

Happy Birthday Noodle.

Look at the woman in this picture. Beautiful, isn't she? A vision. I mean, even though the goofball standing beside her is mugging it up with the big ol' parejo shoved in his gob, she's the one your eyes are naturally drawn to. Her name is Kaitlin. She's my friend. It's her birthday today. (More...)

Gervais@GG's - ReUpped.

Way back in January, I posted a little bit about Ricky Gervais' killer hosting of the Golden Globes. The best bits were posted on Youtube back then and I embedded the vid here, but, as ever, it didn't last long. I promised to repost if it ever became available again...and it I have. (More...)

How to Hard Boil an Egg - The Bigmouthery Cooking Show!

Hello & welcome to the Bigmouthery Cooking Show!

Ever cooked a hard-boiled egg with that grey dishwater film around the yolk? Here's what happened...y'cooked it too long and fucked it up. It shouldn't be too hard to boil an egg....and it isn''s how:

1. Put enough water in a saucepan to completely cover an egg.
2. Bring water to boil.
3. Gently lower a room-temp egg(cold eggs will crack on contact with heat) into the water with a spoon.
4. Turn heat down to medium and cook for 7-8 minutes.
5. Take egg out (if your firwst instinct is to use your fingers then just get out of the kitchen and never go back in).
6. Place into a bowl of very cold water leave to cool for a couple of minutes.

I only use hard-boileds for sammiches and salads, like gado gado & my sexy potato salad.
There should still be a tiny little bit of moisture in the yolk. Like this:

I even like 'em with a bit more moisture, like this:

Either way, it's a damn fine egg. Next up on the cooking show, the perfect winter meal, bacon and cabbage.

Powered down for redesign...

I'm rolling down a well worn road
I'm wondering if I'll ever know
If I'll be better than I was before
When I surface through the service door

I'm on standby
Out of order or sort of unaligned
Powered down for redesign
Bye bye
I'm on standby
According to the work order you signed
I'll be down for some time
I'll be down for some time

I got good at saying "I gotta go"
Number one at saying "I don't know"
But from the stories I've heard
You humans require more words

I'm on standby
Out of order or sort of unaligned
Powered down for redesign
Bye bye
I'm on standby
According to the work order you signed
I'll be down for some time
I'll be down for some time
